the map is not the territory

I think of a portfolio as a map: it points at the work, but it cannot contain the slow part—the learning, abandoned attempts, conversations, and small changes of direction that made the work possible.

My favorite projects begin as a small annoyance and turn into something other people can use.

plans are not mileage

I keep plans loose enough that I can notice what the work is teaching me. A good system needs a direction, but it should not make you miss the interesting turn just because it was not on the original route.

mileage is not the point

I care about technical depth, but I care just as much about the feeling of using a thing. The best software has a little personality and a lot of respect for your attention.
